What Version 1 includes
The first release is deliberately focused: protect data, know whether it worked, and make recovery understandable.
Choose the data that matters, keep versions on a schedule, and restore an individual file without rebuilding the computer.
Capture a Windows system image and use the included attended recovery tools when file-level restore is not enough.
Use local disks, removable USB storage, mapped drives, UNC paths, or an authenticated SMB/NAS share.
Every repository uses the public restic format. Automatic-key and customer-password modes both export a recovery kit for public-tool restore.
Receive testable email notifications, scheduled HTML/PDF reports, health summaries, and plain-English failure details.
The Windows service verifies signed releases, installs eligible stable updates without repeat UAC prompts, and rolls back failed health checks.
In-person deployment
CRU does not hand over an unknown installer and hope for the best. The sale includes a controlled deployment and a customer-specific acceptance check.
CRU creates one machine-bound license, records the support term, and allocates cloud capacity only when purchased.
A technician verifies the signed package and performs the one elevated managed installation.
The wizard verifies storage, encryption recovery, protected data, notifications, schedule, and retention.
Before handoff, CRU runs a backup, repository check, selected-file restore, test email, and report test.
The LocalSystem service runs schedules and signed updates while the desktop app stays responsive for status and restore.
Storage choices
A technician tests the exact destination and credentials during setup. NAS passwords grant storage access; they do not decrypt the backup repository.
Simple local storage with clear disconnected-drive alerts.
Mapped or direct network paths with a built-in destination test.
Optional encrypted off-site storage with capacity provisioned on the license.
License and updates
The standard managed sale is one machine-bound perpetual seat with one year of signed stable-channel updates and support. CRU records the billing contact and support end date at provisioning.
The app shows renewal status and cumulative release notes when a newer supported release is available. CRU also contacts the recorded billing contact before the term ends. If support lapses, new update files are withheld, but installed backup and restore functions continue.
Request update-support renewalCommon questions
Yes. The exported recovery kit includes public restic recovery instructions. Official restic builds can open the repository without CRU software or a CRU license.
No. Automatic-key mode generates a random repository key and protects it for unattended service use. Customer-password mode is also available with an eight-character minimum. Both modes use the same encrypted public restic format.
The initial managed installation is elevated once. After that, the installed LocalSystem service verifies and applies eligible signed updates without asking the customer to approve another UAC prompt.
Usually. It supports mapped drives, UNC paths, and authenticated SMB/NAS shares. The technician uses Test destination and completes a real backup and restore before handoff.
Version 1 is sold as a CRU-managed installation. The technician uses the approved signed bundle and installs the exact private publisher trust required for secured automatic updates.
